Assassin's Creed is a Franco-American action-adventure film based on the eponymous video game franchise created by the French company Ubisoft and directed by Justin Kurzel and starring Michael Fassbender, Marion Cotillard, Jeremy Irons, Michael K. Williams, Ariane Labed and Brendan Gleeson. The film takes place in the same universe as the games and has an original story that expands the mythology of the series. Filming began in August 2015 and continued until January of the following year.
In 1492, during the War of Granada, Aguilar de Nerha is accepted into the Assassins' Creed. He is assigned to protect Prince Ahmed of Granada. In 1986, Callum returns home and finds his mother killed by his father, Joseph, a modern-day Assassin. When the gunmen led by Alan, CEO of the Abstergo Foundation, approach to capture Joseph, the latter convinces Callum to escape.
In 2016, Callum is sentenced to death for murder, but is rescued from execution by the Abstergo Foundation, which falsifies his death, and is transported to his facilities in Madrid, Spain. He was told that the Templars are looking for the Apple of Eden, which contains the genetic code of free will, in order to subdue the human race. Sophia, Alan's daughter and the main scientist, reveals that Callum is a descendant of Aguilar and recruits him for Animus, a machine that will allow him to revive Aguilar's genetic memories so that Abstergo can know the current whereabouts of the Apple.
In Andalusia, Spain in the 15th century, Aguilar and his partner, Maria, are sent to rescue Ahmed, who was kidnapped by master Tomas de Torquemada, to force Ahmed's father, Sultan Muhammad XII, to deliver the Apple. Aguilar and Maria intercept the Templars, but are subdued and captured by Torquemada's executioner, Ojeda, just as Callum is pulled out of the Animus by Sophia.
In captivity, Callum befriends other descendants of Assassins, led by Moussa, descendant of an 18th-century Haitian assassin named Baptiste, and begins to experience hallucinations, dubbed the "Sangria Effect", by Aguilar and Joseph. Callum and Sophia build support on their regressions; And they confess to Callum that his mother was also murdered by an Assassin.
Back at Animus, Aguilar and Maria are scheduled to be executed, but he manages to free himself and her, leading to a chase on the roofs where they in the end perform a "Leap of Faith" (see below) to escape. Callum's mind reacts violently to the session; And he is temporarily paralyzed. He then discovers that Joseph is also present at the facility. Confronting Joseph with his mother's death, Callum is informed that, as a result of the Sangria Effect, memories of him and those of his ancestor Aguilar are merging, allowing Callum to take advantage of Aguilar's combat skills; He also learns that his mother was an Assassin who chose to die at the hand of Joseph, instead of being subjected to Animus by the Templars. Callum promises to destroy the Assassin's Creed by finding the apple. Meanwhile, Alan is pressured by his superior, Ellen Kaye, to close the Animus Project due to its lack of results, leading Sophia to question Alan's true intentions.
Callum gladly enters Animus once again, when Aguilar and Maria ambush a meeting between Muhammad and Ojeda. They manage to kill the Templars and recover the Apple of Eden, although Ojeda captures it to force Aguilar to surrender it; But she chooses death, and Ojeda fatally stabs her before Aguilar kills her. He then escapes, performing another Leap of Faith, whose strength causes the Animus to work violently. Aguilar then gives the Apple to Christopher Columbus, who promises to take him to his grave. Moussa and the other murderous prisoners start a riot, in which Joseph is killed by Abstergo.
Callum is in the chamber of Animus and is found with the projections of a number of his Assassin ancestors, including Aguilar, Arno Dorian (protagonist of the game Assassin's Creed Unity), his father Joseph, and his mother. Callum fully embraces the creed of his ancestors and, having fully assimilated Aguilar's memories and skills, joins the Assassins and escapes.
Having recovered the Apple, Alan and his followers then take it to a Templar shrine in London to perform a ceremony. Inside the sanctuary, disillusioned Sophia meets Callum, who came to take the Apple of Eden; And it reluctantly allows you to act. Callum goes after Alan and kills him to retrieve the Apple, after which the Assassins leave, promising once again to protect her. Sophia is seen in the end promising revenge against Callum.
