That power had absorbed all it passed, until it met Jean. Meanwhile, Hank McCoy, who felt betrayed by Jean's Raven's death, allied himself with Erik and the mutant refugees to destroy Jean in New York City.

As they fight, Erik tries to infiltrate the building and confront Jean but is overwhelmed by her new abilities. Xavier then entered the building with Scott Summers. Jean attacked them until Xavier persuaded her to read his memory - allowing her personality to rise. Feeling regret, Jean asks Vuk to take away the power she is holding; however, it was quickly shown that doing so would kill her. Xavier and Scott tried to prevent Vuk from fully absorbing Jean's power, before both mutants, including Jean, were captured by the US government sent troops [needing further explanation] and locked on. a train train towards a mutant containment facility
Xavier admitted to Hank that he was wrong in invading Jean's mind and lying to her. The train is attacked by Vuk and her D'Bari forces. When the soldiers are overwhelmed by D'Bari, the mutants are freed to fight the threat. After the mutants defeat most of D'Bari's attackers, Vuk arrives and approaches Jean, defeating each mutant who tries to stop her. Meanwhile, Xavier realized Jean was on his mind and said that all he did was to let Jean have a family, eventually being forgiven by her. Jean saves the mutants from the attacks of Vuk and the train wreck. She then easily "blows" the remaining D'Bari aliens when they try to attack her. Vuk once again tries to take the full power of Jean, but she pulls Vuk out into space and regains the power Vuk had taken from her earlier, before releasing her power, killing Vuk. Jean disappears when all of her hidden powers are released in the form of a phoenix-shaped energy stream.
In the aftermath of the incident, the school was renamed Jean Gray School for capable children and Hank became their new principal; and Xavier retired after decades of fighting for rights for mutants.
