In 2012, the world economy plummeted. A wave of violence and crime unprecedented in history was unleashed worldwide. To control criminals, private companies take control of prisons in the United States. For profit, a tournament known as the "Death Race" takes place at the Terminal Island Penitentiary, a race of armored and modified cars with defensive and offensive weapons. It is celebrated for 3 days each year, and the inmates of said penitentiary participate in the tournament. The prize: the winner of 5 tournaments, gets his freedom and all his antecedents are erased.
At the start of his fifth race, the mysterious 4-tournament champion known as Frankenstein (voiced by David Carradine) is killed by Joseph "Machine Gun Joe" Manson (Tyrese Gibson), mysteriously failing all of his defensive and offensive weapons. .
Meanwhile, former bankrupt factory worker Jensen Ames (Jason Statham) is falsely accused of the murder of his wife and held in the Terminal Island jail. There, the ruthless mayor, Hennessey (Joan Allen), convinces him to impersonate the late Frankenstein to keep the tournament legend alive. She meets his ops team: Coach (Ian McShane), Coach, Gunner (Jacob Vargas), a weapons expert, and Lists (Frederick Koehler), a know-it-all inmate with a lot of knowledge about cars and competitors. Once in the "Death Race," her navigator, Katrina Case (Natalie Martinez), explains the laws of the Tournament.
Then, during the first round, she discovers that a running back named "Pachenko" (Max Ryan) is possibly the real murderer of his wife, coerced by Hennessey. She also forces Case to tell the truth: that she had sabotaged Frankenstein's weapons, blackmailed by Hennessey to get her freedom. After killing Pachenko in the second round, Jensen must join forces with Joe to destroy a gigantic armored truck that Hennessey had created. In this battle, Joe confirms his suspicions that the original Frankenstein had been killed by him and that the new Frankenstein is actually Jensen Ames.
Hennessey, aware that Jensen knows that she ordered Pachenko to kill his wife, continues with the deception of obtaining Jensen's freedom, but asks him to consider staying permanently as Frankenstein. As a precautionary measure, she places an explosive under her modified 2006 Ford Mustang GT. During the last race, Hennessey manipulates the race in Joe's favor. Just when she looked like he was going to win, Joe and Jensen escape through a damaged wall of the Terminal Island complex. A desperate Hennessey tries to activate the bomb, but it turns out that the operations team had found it, removed it and deactivated it, the Ames team sees the switch and Lists says: "Someone is upset." After crossing the Terminal Island bridge, Joe and Jensen's cars separate, and the helicopters follow the latter. So, Case offers to put on the Frankenstein mask and turn himself in, to give Jensen time to escape, because, as she says, "He owes it to Frankenstein" and because Hennessey had already signed his papers anyway. release. This causes Jensen to escape, while Case is arrested. After all this, Hennessey receives an anonymous donation from a "great admirer of his" and it turns out that the gift was the bomb destined for Frankenstein, which Coach had sent, who remotely detonated it, killing Hennessey and ends by saying: "I love a lot. this sport".
