When World War II ended in 1945, Japan faced widespread devastation in the form of American bombing, which devastated city after city. Hotaru no Haka, also known as Grave of the Fireflies, is the story of Seita and her sister Setsuko, two Japanese children whose lives were ravaged by brutal war. They have lost their mother, father, home, and a bright future — all the tragic consequences of war.
Now orphaned and homeless, Seita and Setsuko have no choice but to drift across the countryside, besieged by hunger and disease. Encountered with adult indifference along the way, they find that desperate circumstances can turn even the kindest of people cruel but hope their youth shines brightly in the face of it. with constant difficulty, preventing you from quickly succumbing to an inevitable fate.

I'm surprised there aren't many reviews of Hotaru no Haka (Grave of Fireflies) questioning all the praise it has received. I was equally surprised by the ability of people to devour a seemingly sad story, claiming it gave them a 'feel' and giving it high marks. If you watch Grave of the Fireflies critically, there's no denying that you'll find deep moral themes and issues; however, the way the themes and messages are presented lacks a genuine sense of pity or grief. The emotions I felt the most were, surprisingly enough, frustration and disappointment.
