Gundala is a 2019 Indonesian superhero film based on the comics character Gundala created by Harya “Hasmi” Suraminata in 1969, co-produced by Screenplay Films and Bumilangit Studios, and distributed by Legacy Pictures. It is the first installment in the Bumilangit Cinematic Universe (BCU). The film is directed and written by Joko Anwar, and stars Abimana Aryasatya as Sancaka / Gundala, alongside Tara Basro, Bront Palarae, Ario Bayu, Cecep Arif Rahman, Rio Dewanto, and Muzakki Ramdhan.
Based on Harya “Hasmi” Suraminata’s 1969 comic book series of the same name, Gundala tells an origin story about a boy named Sancaka (Muzakki Ramdhan) who lost both of their parents and gradually on his own. After meeting a street kid (Fariz Fadjar’s Awang) who teaches him how to survive in the streets and the art of self-defence, the movie eventually traces from Sancaka’s difficult childhood to adulthood (now played by Abimana Aryasatya). Working as a lowly security guard in a printing factory, he tries his best keeping himself out of trouble. But he soon finds himself dealing with Pengkor (Bront Palarae), a disfigured and tyrannical gangster boss looking to poison the nation’s rice supply with a dangerous serum.
Abimana Aryasatya as Sancaka/Gundala, a security guard who was struck by lightning, giving him superhuman powers and turning him into the superhero Gundala.
Muzakki Ramdhan portrays young Sancaka. Tara Basro as Sedhah Esti Wulan/Merpati, Sancaka's neighbour and love interest. She inspires Sancaka to take up the responsibility as a superhuman and a hero.
Bront Palarae as Pengkor, a disfigured mafia boss controlling the city's underworld. Pengkor was disfigured when he was a child after his father's plantation workers burned down their house, leaving him bitter and vowing revenge on the world. Pengkor means "limp" in Indonesian.
Zayen Aqilah portrays young Pengkor. Ario Bayu as Ghazul, Pengkor's partner and confidant who is bent on world domination himself. The character remained nameless for most of the film, only revealing his name to Ki Wilawuk at the end of the movie. Ghazul is one of Gundala's most famous nemesis from the comics.
Lukman Sardi as Ridwan Bahri, a politician allied to Sancaka and the leader of Rumah Perdamaian
REVIEW Gundala ENGLISH SUB ON XEMOVIE
Gundalan” delivers strongly for the vast majority of the running time and offers an engaging and exciting offshore alternative to American superhero franchises. Anwar includes some lovely wry humor around the evolution of Gundala’s costume, which is cobbled from bits of rubber and held together by duct tape, but wisely avoids throwing too many wisecracks around.
Produced on an amazingly low reported budget of about $2.1 million, the film looks and sounds great. Tanjung’s striking widescreen images of downtrodden humans trapped in a city dominated by brutalist public buildings, massive apartment blocks and gargantuan factories constitute a powerful vision of hell on earth. The end credits include a memorial notice for Khikmawan Santosa, sound designer of more than 200 features. His outstanding work here makes a great contribution to the first Indonesian feature presented in Dolby Atmos.
