Ip Man 3 is a 2015 Hong Kong biographical martial arts film directed by Wilson Yip, produced by Raymond Wong and written by Edmond Wong with action choreography by Yuen Woo-ping. It is the third in the Ip Man film series based on the life of the Wing Chun grandmaster Ip Man and features Donnie Yen reprising the title role. Ip Man's pupil Bruce Lee is portrayed by Danny Chan and Ip Man's fellow Wing Chun expert and rival Cheung Tin-chi (張天志), also known as Sum Nung, is portrayed by Zhang Jin. The film also features Mike Tyson. Principal photography commenced in March 2015 and ended in June of that year.
Ip Man 3 went on to portray his life in Hong Kong, with new conflicts that he could not avoid. But the content and motifs of the third episode do not mechanically repeat the previous two episodes. The script builds on conflicts between Grandmaster Ip Man and dishonest local organizations who defy the morality and the law for money. During times of turmoil, the local government could not protect the people, and they were forced to stand up for themselves.
Ip Man and his students are trusted and seen as security guards, a single symbol of strength and resistance to evil. He no longer struggles for national pride, revenge or any sublime ideals. Ip Man simply fights for the simple that happens every day, sticking with his life.
Donnie Yen as Ip Man, the sole practitioner of the martial art Wing Chun. He arrives in Hong Kong with his family during the 1940s to settle there and set up a Wing Chun school.
Lynn Hung as Cheung Wing-sing, Ip Man's wife and mother of their two sons, Ip Chun and Ip Ching.
Patrick Tam as Ma King-sang, local Triad leader and former martial arts disciple.
Kent Cheng as Fat Po, head of the British Hong Kong Police and friend of Ip Man.
Bryan Leung as Tin Ngo-san, a local martial arts master and umbrella salesman.
Danny Chan as Bruce Lee
Mike Tyson as Frank, an American property developer and proficient boxer, with links to the local Triads.
The rhythm of Ip Man 3 is soft, mixed with drama and psychological scenes. Compared to the previous installments, this one is more serious and less humorous and more emotional. Interaction between Donnie Yen and his wife - makes the story more emotional. Ip Man's marital love storyline "knocked out" female audiences and made male viewers reflect on family values as well as important things in life. Diep Man 3 is a "brilliant fireworks display" that closes the nearly 10-year journey on the silver screen of great master Vinh Xuan Quyen. Chan Tu Dan also expressed that this could be the last martial arts film in his acting career.
