Monstrum is a South Korean fantasy film co-written and directed by Huh Jong-ho, released in 2018
The story takes place in 1527 and revolves around the hunt for a gigantic and very aggressive creature called "Monstrum" which terrorizes the population.
It receives mixed reviews because of its predictable storyline and is a 2018 South Korean box office failure with 723,951 admissions and $ 5.5 million in revenue. It is nonetheless praised for the quality of its special effects, for successfully keeping the spectator in suspense thanks to the mystery surrounding the creature, and is selected to be in competition at the International Film Festival of Catalonia.
In 1527, in Joseon Korea, during the reign of King Jungjong, when the plague hit the country, a rumor spread about the existence of a terrifying creature nicknamed "Monstrum" who would live on Mount Inwang ( en) and descend to attack the population. The king is however convinced that it is only a rumor launched by his prime minister with the aim of dismissing him. He therefore appeals to Yoon-gyeom, who was once his most loyal general before retiring, to investigate. Accompanied by his daughter Myeong, his right-hand man Seong-han and royal justice officer Heo, Yoon-gyeom sets out to find the mysterious creature to find out if it really exists.
Yoon Gyeom is a loyal subject of King Jung Jong of Joseon. He struggles to fight a monster that threatens King Jung Jong's life and a group of people is trying to bring King Jung Jong down.
