Mortal (Torden, literally “Thunder”) is a Norwegian fantasy film co-written, co-produced and directed by André Øvredal, released in 2020.
A young Norwegian-American man, Eric took refuge in a tent located in the forest of a small mountainous region of Norway. where he loses consciousness. When he wakes up, he realizes that he is injured and breaks into a clinic to steal medicine and heal himself in the bathroom of a gas station. As he wanders around the city, he crosses paths with a gang of teenagers who provoke him and, suddenly, endowed with powers he cannot control, Eric causes the accidental death of one of them. Arrested by the police, he was immediately questioned at the police station by a psychologist, Christine, who questioned him about a fire on a farm which killed five people. The suspect confirms to him that he is responsible for their death, especially since they knew them, as well as that of the teenager and shows him his impressive supernatural gifts which he does not control. Indeed, it can control with electricity and play with it to increase them or even make them deadly. He can therefore burn those who approach him and kill them. To return to normal, he must learn to calm his intense emotions which push him to hurt others. Their interview is completed by his extradition on American soil and, placed under sedation during his transfer in a helicopter, his awakening triggers the crash of the aircraft in the open sea. Before fleeing, he saves the life of an agent. American who was traveling with him.
Tracked down by the army and the police, Eric finds help with Christine and a sheriff who agree to help him discover the origin of his divine powers which would be linked to Norwegian mythology. He would be the reincarnation of the god Thor…
