Shinobi no kuni is a Japanese film directed by Yoshihiro Nakamura, released on July 1, 2017.
It totaled $ 18,000,000 at the 2017 Japanese box office. It is an adaptation of the eponymous novel by Ryō Wada. Set during the Azuchi Momoyama era, the film focuses on the events of Tenshō's Iga War which sees several ninja clans resist Oda Nobunaga's attacks.
Warlord Oda Nobunaga quickly defeats his enemies in his quest to pacify and unify the country under his rule. There is, however, one region that he himself fears: Iga Province where the ninja of the Iga-ryū school live, known for possessing extraordinary weapons of war, not thinking like humans, and murdering for money. . One of his ninjas, Mumon, recognized as an exceptional assassin who has no equal in combat, has earned the nickname "Iga's strongest ninja". He is however also lazy and only seeks to earn money to please his wife, Okuni. At the same time, a ninja named Heibee Shimoyama becomes disillusioned with the lifestyle of his people.
One day, Mumon kills a ninja from a different family for a reward, unaware that his actions will ultimately lead to a deadly battle between Nobunaga's army and the ninjas of Iga Province.
