Pacific Rim is an American film about sci-fi and monsters was released in 2013 and directed by Guillermo del Toro, with the participation of a cast including Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Kikuchi Rinko, Charlie Day, Burn Gorman, Robert Kazinsky, Max Martin and Ron Perlman. The screenplay was penned by Travis Beacham and del Toro, developing from Beacham's original storyline.
The film takes place in the future Earth, when giant sea monsters called Kaiju attack and threaten the life of mankind. After many unsuccessful extermination methods over the years, the human race invented a special weapon called the Jaeger - giant humanoid robots controlled by human nerves. The robots are equipped with ultimate weapons. Dr. Jasper Schoenfeld came up with this idea after the Kaiju monster attacked Sydney for the fourth time.
Charlie Hunnam as Raleigh Becket
A washed-up former pilot called out of retirement by the Pan Pacific Defense Corps. Describing the character, Hunnam stated: "When you meet me, in the beginning of the story, I've suffered a giant loss. Not only has it killed my sense of self-worth, but also my will to fight and keep on going. And then, Rinko and Idris, and a couple other people, bring me out of retirement to try to help with this grand push. I think that journey is a very relatable one. Everybody, at some point in their life, has fallen down and not felt like getting back up, but you have to, no matter how difficult it is.
Idris Elba as Marshal Stacker Pentecost
Raleigh's commanding officer in Pan Pacific Defense Corps and former Jaeger pilot dying of radiation poisoning due to lax radiation shielding on the first Jaeger models. ... To prepare for the role, Elba watched footage of politicians David Cameron and Barack Obama, as well as Russell Crowe in Gladiator and Mel Gibson in Braveheart. Del Toro initially offered the role to Tom Cruise, who declined because of scheduling conflicts.
Rinko Kikuchi as Mako Mori
Raleigh's co-pilot who lost her family in a Kaiju attack and was adopted by Pentecost. Though Mori possesses a strength and fury that should serve well against the Kaiju, Pentecost is reluctant to use her, partly because of a fatherly bond and partly because he knows she is still fighting the terror of her childhood.
Pacific Rim can be considered as a synthesis of quintessence from many other robot and monster fantasy movies. Audiences may notice the film's familiarity with monsters like Godzilla, or robots that closely resemble Transformers. The two main characters also have a similar shape to Tron: Legacy. Although there are many similarities, but Pacific Rim is much more elaborate.
In addition to the skillful elements and fiery battles, Pacific Super War also brings humorous scenes, mixed with a bit of romance according to the familiar Hollywood formula. Newton Geiszler's character Dr. Newton is the most prominent comedy in the film. The love story between Rayleigh and Mako is also gently built, not cheesy, suitable for a fantasy action movie.
Although there are no A-list actors, but with its top-notch techniques, and many entertainment elements both in terms of visual and sound, it has brought a lot of success to the film. For those who love action fantasy movies, especially super cool robots, this is a work worth enjoying.
