ABOUT THE MOVIE POETRY (2010)

"Poetry" (Korean: 시; Korean: Poetry; RR: Si) is a 2010 Korean drama film directed by Li Changdong. It tells the story of a 60-year-old suburban woman who became interested in poetry while battling Alzheimer's disease and her irresponsible grandson. Yoon Jung Hee plays the leading role. This is the first time she has directed a movie since 1994. The film was shortlisted for the main competition at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival and won the award for best screenplay. Other awards include the Big Bell Award for Best Picture and Best Actress, Blue Dragon Film Award for Best Actress, Los Angeles Film Critics Association Best Actress Award, and Asia Pacific Screen Film Award for Best Director and Best Acting Award.

The movie opens by the river, and the children are playing on the riverbank. The body of a girl in school uniform floats by.

The 66-year-old grandmother Yang Meizi (Yun Zhengxi) consulted a doctor in a hospital. She was worried about her forgetfulness and referred to a specialist. When she left the hospital, she saw a woman mad from grief because her 16-year-old daughter drowned.

Although Mi-ja depends on government welfare for a living, she has very few jobs to take care of a wealthy old man who has suffered a stroke. At home, she takes care of her 16-year-old weak grandson Zhong Yu (Lee David), whose divorced mother lives in Busan. When Mi-ja asked Wook about the drowning girl in his class, Wook insisted that he didn't know her.

When Mi-ja noticed that posters for the choir were being advertised in the local community center, she decided to sign up. The course assignment is to write a poem before the end of the one-month course. On the advice of the teacher, she began to write notes about what she saw, especially flowers.

Wook often leaves home in the early morning to socialize with five other boys after school. One night, he invited everyone over without notifying Mi-ja. Mi-ja still tried to be a polite host, offering them refreshments before they disappeared into Wook's bedroom. Later, the father of one boy insisted that Meijia join him, and the fathers of other boys attended the meeting. She was told that the boys had repeatedly raped a girl Agnes in the past six months before jumping off the bridge and rushing into the river to drown. Her diary was discovered, even though only four members of the school teachers knew about it.
