Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is a future American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics Shang-Chi character. Produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, it will be the twenty-fifth film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton from a screenplay by David Callaham and starring Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, alongside Awkwafina, Tony Leung, Fala Chen, Meng'er Zhang, Florian Munteanu, Ronny Chieng and Michelle Yeoh . In the film, Shang-Chi is forced to confront his past after being attracted to the Ten Rings organization.
A Shang-Chi-based film has been in development since 2001, but the project would not move forward until 2018 with the hiring of screenwriter David Callaham. Director Destin Daniel Cretton joined the production in March 2019, with the project accelerated to be the first Marvel film featuring an Asian protagonist. The film's title and main cast were announced in July, revealing the film's connection to Mandarin (Leung) and its organization Ten Rings, which appear throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Filming began in February 2020, but was suspended in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Production resumed in August before ending in October. Filming took place in Sydney and San Francisco.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is scheduled to be released in the United States on September 3, 2021, as part of UCM Phase Four.
When Shang-Chi is attracted to the clandestine organization Ten Rings, he is forced to confront the past he thought he left behind.
Simu Liu as Shang-Chi:
A skilled martial artist who was trained by the Ten Rings organization to be a murderer since childhood and who tried to create a normal life in San Francisco. Director Destin Daniel Cretton described Shang-Chi as "a child out of his element and a fish out of water here in the USA, and he is covering it up with this charisma that I find very identifiable".
Awkwafina as Katy:
A hotel valet and a close friend of Shang-Chi who doesn't know his past. Awkwafina described her character as identifiable and with "a real heart" and dedication to Shang-Chi, saying "she is thrown into a world where she really doesn't know what to do. At the same time, she is discovering things about yourself ".
Tony Leung as Wenwu / Mandarin:
Shang-Chi's father and leader of the terrorist organization Ten Rings, who is a powerful and ancient figure. Wenwu is an original character from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, who has taken on many different names, including Mandarin. Producer Jonathan Schwartz said that "Mandarin" comes with expectations, "very specific" from the audience, and felt that having Wenwu as Mandarin would combine with that and create "a more complex and layered view of the character". Mandarin replaces Shang-Chi's father in the comics, Fu Manchu, a "troubled character" associated with racist stereotypes to which Marvel Studios does not have cinema rights. Destin director Daniel Cretton said he wanted to change the problematic aspects of Mandarin, saying: "I think [Leung] brings a humanity that we need for this character. We no longer want to contribute to the Asian stereotypes that we have seen, both in cinema and in pop culture. ... [Leung] is such an incredible actor and I'm excited that he helps us break some of those stereotypes ", Leung avoided making Wenwu" a one-dimensional heartless villain "by allowing the character to have" a profound capacity to love ".
Fala Chen as Jiang Li.
Meng'er Zhang as Xialing: Shang-Chi's estranged sister and Wenwu's daughter.
Florian Munteanu as William Young / Razor Fist:: A skilled martial artist and mercenary hired to assassinate Shang-Chi.
Ronny Chieng as Jon Jon : A friend of Shang-Chi.
Michelle Yeoh as Jiang Nan. Yeoh previously played Aleta Ogord in the movie Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017)
