The Last Princess, also known as Princess Deokhye, is a South Korean historical-drama genre film released on August 3, 2016.
The film is based on the novel "Deokhyeongjoo" by Kwon Bi-young. And it describes the life of the Korean Princess Deokhye in Japan, after the Japanese imperial government forced her to move there at the age of 13, and the Princess's numerous attempts to return to Korea.
In 1925, Korea is ruled by Japan and the young Princess Deokhye, the last 13-year-old princess of the Joseon Dynasty, is kidnapped and forced to move to Japan to attend school there. Missing her home, after finishing school, she tries to return several times, but the pro-Japanese general Han Taek-soo stops her. With the harsh conditions of the time, Deokhye struggles to maintain the hope of the Korean people.
One day, when the Princess reunites with her friend and childhood sweetheart, Kim Jang-han, now called "Kazuma Eiko" an officer lieutenant in the Japanese Imperial Army, who is secretly part of the Korean independence movement, he plans to a secret operation to transfer Deokhye and his brother Yi Un to Shanghai, seat of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea. However, his plan fails after Taek-soo discovers them, and ends up separating Deokhye and Jang-han, causing them to lose contact with each other.
In 1931 Deokhye now a grown woman, she is forced to marry Count Takeyuki So, and shortly after giving birth to her daughter she begins to develop schizophrenia.
Decades after being forced to separate from Deokhye, Jang-han now a journalist, finally finds her in a Japanese psychiatric hospital, where the princess had tried to take her life on several occasions. Jang-han manages to persuade the South Korean government to allow the princess to enter the country again.
Finally after 38 years away from her home and her village, on January 26, 1962, Deokhye manages to return to her homeland with Jang-han, who becomes her guardian.
