The Road Home is a 1999 Chinese film directed by Zhang Yimou and based on a novel by Bao Shi, who also wrote the screenplay. It marked the film debut of its protagonist, Chinese actress Zhang Ziyi
After the death of his father, Luo Yusheng returns to his hometown. His mother wants the funeral traditions to be respected, which implies that the coffin is carried to the town carried by a group of porters, on foot. However, almost all the young men have left for the city and there are not enough men to carry out this task, so the mayor tries to convince the widow to transport the body with the help of a tractor. In this context, Luo Yusheng recalls the story of how her parents met and fell in love with each other, when she was an eighteen-year-old girl and he came to town as a new teacher.
