This article features the fourth season of the epic American fantasy television series Game of Thrones, which premieres April 6 to June 15, 2014 on HBO, Sundays at 9 p.m. Composed of ten episodes1 lasting approximately 55 minutes, it covers the second half of the third volume, A Storm of Swords, of the fantasy saga A Song of Ice and Fire by George RR Martin, as well as elements from the fourth and fifth volumes, A Feast for Crows and A Dance with Dragons
The Lannisters' grip on the Iron Throne is now complete, after the Crimson Wedding Massacre, which saw the death of many supporters of Camp Stark and effectively shattered the uprising in the North, which took a decisive turn in the War of the Five Kings in favor of the Lannisters.
As Stannis Baratheon, pretender to the Iron Throne, continues to rebuild his army in Dragonstone, imminent danger arrives from the South, in the person of Oberyn Martell. The latter, who arrived in Port-Réal for the wedding of King Joffrey and his fiancée Margaery Tyrell, is haunted by a desire for revenge. During the wedding of King Joffrey, the latter mysteriously dies of poisoning during the banquet and his uncle Tyrion is accused of having murdered him. Joffrey's younger brother, Tommen, therefore ascends to the throne.
In the North, the weakened Night's Watch seems overwhelmed by the advancing Savage army of Mance Rayder, itself pursued by a more formidable enemy: the White Walkers.
In the east, Daenerys Targaryen, accompanied by her three dragons and her army of the Immaculate, prepares to liberate the city of Meereen, which could provide her with enough ships to reach Westeros and thus claim the Iron Throne.
